Location and Vehicle Access

Deleng Sibuaten is located in Karo Regency, in the same region as Mount Sinabung and Mount Sibayak. This highest peak in North Sumatra spans four subdistricts: Merek, Munte, Tiga Panah, and Juhar.

The meeting point for the trip to Deleng Sibuaten is the city of Medan. Travelers from downtown can take a bus or minibus at Simpang Pos Padang Bulan, then head to Sidikalang, Dairi Regency. They can also take the Medan-Berastagi or Kabanjahe intercity bus from the Amplas Integrated Terminal.

Typically, the journey from Simpang Pos takes about 3 hours to reach Nagalingga Village in Merek, Karo. If departing from the Amplas Integrated Terminal, travelers can get off at the Kabanjahe Terminal.

From there, visitors can continue their journey using local transportation to Nagalingga Village. After that, travelers simply follow the Pedati trail to the Deleng Sibuaten Forest Entrance.

Hours of Operation

It’s important to remember that the hiking trail on Mount Sibuatan isn’t open all the time. This is because the management only grants hiking permits from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

If you arrive outside these hours, you’ll have to wait until the next morning. To wait for the trail to open, you can spend the night at the registration post or camp in the area near Pintu Rimba.

Meanwhile, you must align your hiking schedule with the information provided during registration. If you plan to stay on the mountain for only two days, you must descend on the second day.

If not, a team from Gempari will come to pick them up immediately. It is important to follow this rule for safety during the hike.

For your information, as of April 2026, the entrance fee for Deleng Sibuaten is Rp 10,000 per person. Parking fees are Rp 10,000 for motorcycles and Rp 40,000 for cars.

Hiking Trails

Deleng Sibuaten is a densely forested mountain, making the hiking trail quite challenging. Large tree roots also frequently cross the path. Given these trail conditions, it’s advisable to wear sturdy footwear, such as hiking boots.

Hikers can start the trail from the Deleng Sibuaten Forest Entrance. The hike takes approximately 7 to 9 hours and passes through 5 shelters before reaching the summit.

Shelter 1

The route from Pintu Rimba to Shelter 1 takes about 30 minutes. The journey is lined with large trees, much like the forests found at the base of other mountains.

Shelter 2

The distance from Shelter 1 to Shelter 2 is about 45 minutes. The journey is mostly through increasingly dense forest. There is plenty of thick moss in various shapes, which is one of the distinctive features of Deleng Sibuaten.

Shelter 3

The hike to Shelter 3 on Mount Sibuatan takes about 3 hours. This is the perfect spot to take a break. The trail is quite long and challenging, so it’s important to bring a raincoat because fog often rolls in in this area.

Shelter 4

The trail to Shelter 4 is considered the most difficult. The hike itself takes about an hour and features a very challenging route. Hikers will encounter muddy terrain that is 30–50 cm deep and cold temperatures.

Shelter 5

The hike to Shelter 5 takes about an hour. The terrain becomes steeper, so it’s important to keep your footing to maintain your balance.

This spot is a great camping spot for hikers who want to watch the sunrise the next morning. From Shelter 5, hikers can reach the summit in about an hour.

Deleng Sibuaten features a variety of moss vegetation covering nearly 75% of its tropical forest. After a 1.5-hour hike, hikers will arrive at the Deleng Sibuaten Moss Forest area. The trail is adorned with yellowish-green moss clinging to the sides of the path.

Interestingly, the sensation of thirst during the hike will diminish as you enter the cool, humid air. Sunlight also rarely penetrates the canopy due to the dense vegetation.

Strict Cleanliness Regulations

Before beginning the hike, visitors must check in at the registration desk and provide personal identification. After that, the Gempari team will inspect the hikers’ belongings.

All items will be fully recorded, including their quantities, particularly supplies. This inventory is conducted to determine whether the supplies are sufficient for the duration of the hike. If deemed insufficient, hikers must first replenish them in order to obtain a hiking permit.

Upon descending, the team will verify whether the amount of trash brought down matches the records from registration. If found to have left trash behind, the hiker may be fined and required to clean the Nagalingga Village area or pay a fee of Rp 500,000. This regulation is designed to foster hikers’ environmental awareness.

It is important to carefully review all the information regarding the climb on Mount Sibuatan. By having complete information, climbers can embark on the trail safely, excitingly, and enjoyably.
