This hill can be accessed via two main routes from the city of Medan. The overland route passes through Kabanjahe, Tanah Karo, Merek, to Tele and Samosir, covering a distance of approximately 198.7 km and taking 6–7 hours. An alternative route goes via the Medan–Tebing Tinggi toll road, Pematang Siantar, and Parapat, totaling 341 km and taking about 8 hours.

The second route goes through Parapat and then crosses to Samosir Island via ferry to Tomok or Simanindo. This boat trip offers expansive views of Lake Toba and provides a unique experience. Upon arrival in Samosir, the overland journey continues for about 1–2 hours to the destination.

From Pangururan, the distance to Bukit Holbung is approximately 22.2 km, with a travel time of 40–60 minutes. The road to the location is quite narrow in some sections, especially along the hillside. Drivers should exercise caution when passing other vehicles.

The route via Tele is often considered the most scenic, offering stunning views of mountains and valleys.
